Serra do Castelo is an integral part of the county of Baião, making the transition of the elevations to the headland of the tributaries of the river Douro.
Though similar to Serra da Aboboreira, this space is more varied due to its broader range of natural conditions, including the schist zone, plateau area with a low incline next to rougher areas and steeps covered in agricultural forestry, occupied by small villages on the upper and centre third of the small river basins. The urban settlements lie within agricultural areas and forests of maritime pine and eucalyptus trees.
The narrow Carneiro road forms the link to the mountain range of Marão.
The agricultural and agroforest mosaics of Viariz, Valadares and Gestaçô, located at a lower height, form the gradual link to the Douro. They are very scenic mosaics with a high ecological diversity.
